UNESCO declared World Heritage Monument. 1000 years old Engineering miracle, its shadow disappears !!!!


Thanjai Periya Kovil or Thanjai Big Temple (Periyaandavar kovil or Brihadeeswarar Temple ) In Thanjai, Tamilnadu,India.,

Built-in the year 1010 CE by Raja Raja Chola in Thanjavur, the temple is popularly known as the Big Temple. It turned 1000 years old in September 2010.

This temple is one of the largest temples of India, and one of the supreme brilliance of Indian architecture.

And interestingly an Engineering miracle, the temple tower or the Gopuram or the Vimana is constructed in such a manner that its shadow disappears at noon.

The temple has the world's tallest vimanam (temple tower) and its Kumbam (the structure on the top) weighs approximately 80 tons. The temple has a huge statue of Nandi (sacred bull) at the entrance. The statue is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 20 tons. The Lingam inside the temple is 3.7 meters tall.

The Big Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was constructed by Chola King Rajaraja Chola 1 during his reign from 985-1012 A.D. The temple took about 15 years to complete and is an example of unique Chola architecture. UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage Monument.
