Tiger conservation

 Tiger conservation

Why we need tiger conservation?

In the year 1900 tiger population was about 1,00,000, but today census says 2608 to 3905 in the world.

There are eight recognized subspecies of tiger, five of which are living (Bengal, Amur, Indo-Chinese, Sumatran and South China tigers), nearing extinction!!!
Other three already extinct.

Which ruled earth for about 2 million   years.

WHY SHOULD WE SAVE TIGER?

# Tiger play pivotal role in the health of the ecosystem.

# Tigers constitute the top carnivores in the ecosystem and is at the apex of the food chain.

# The removal of a top carnivore from an ecosystem can have an impact on the relative abundance of herbivore species within a guild.

Time to conservation.

Time to act now.

Tiger conservation is an effort to preserve the tiger population and its natural habitat. Here are some ways to conserve tigers

Protect habitats

Secure large, biologically diverse forests and grasslands where tigers live. Protecting these landscapes also helps other threatened species that live there.

Reduce poaching

Refuse to buy tiger parts or items made from tiger derivatives. Speak to poachers and encourage them to stop. If you know of any poaching or illegal wildlife trade, report it to the local law enforcement.

Support ecotourism

Ecotourism in tiger reserves can promote understanding of the ecosystems that support tigers. Revenue from ecotourism can also contribute to conservation efforts.

Suport international efforts

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has been important in improving international efforts to conserve tigers.

Here are some organizations that work to conserve tigers:

Tiger Conservation Coalition: A group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work to conserve tigers.

National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA): An organization that works to protect tigers in India. The NTCA has established a Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) to protect tigers in areas vulnerable to poaching.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): An organization that works to protect tigers and their habitats.

The IUCN Red List estimates that there are between 2,608 and 3,905 wild tigers left in the world. While tiger numbers have increased due to conservation efforts, the species is still endangered.

Project Tiger is a wildlife conservation movement initiated in India to protect the endangered tiger. The project was initiated in 1973 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India. As of 2024, there are 57 protected areas that have been designated as tiger reserves under the project. As of 2023, there were 3,682 wild tigers in India, which is almost 75% of the world's wild tiger population.

At the turn of the 20th century, one estimate of the tiger population in India placed the figure at 100,000, yet an Indian tiger census conducted in 1972 revealed the existence of only 1,827 tigers.

Say 'NO' to tiger trade by refusing to buy tiger parts and items prepared from tiger derivatives. Speak to tiger and wild ungulate poachers and persuade them to give up poaching. If you know of any information on poaching or trade of illegal wildlife, inform the local law enforcement agencies.

Tiger conservation is an attempt to help prevent the tiger (Panther tigris) from becoming extinct and to protect and preserve the tiger's natural habitat, including habitat suitability, reintroduction of the tiger's prey, the elimination of poaching, tiger smuggling, and illegal trade.

10 Reasons Tigers Are Endangered

Tigers are one of the most iconic and revered animals in the world. Their strength, agility, and beauty have captured the imagination of people for centuries. However, these magnificent creatures are facing the threat of extinction due to a combination of factors, most of them driven by human activities. In this article, we will explore the top 10 reasons tigers are endangered, and what can be done to save them from disappearing forever.

1. Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade

2. Habitat Loss and Fragmentation

3. Human-Wildlife Conflict

4. Climate Change

5. Inbreeding and Genetic Diversity

6. Prey Depletion

7. Infrastructure Development

8. Lack of Effective Conservation Policies and Enforcement

9. Political Instability and Conflict

10. Public Awareness and Support

What Can Be Done to Save Endangered Tigers?

Efforts to save endangered tigers must be multifaceted and address the various factors contributing to their decline. Some key strategies that can be employed include:

*Strengthening anti-poaching measures and law enforcement to combat illegal wildlife trade

*Implementing habitat conservation and restoration projects to preserve and reconnect fragmented tiger habitats

*Developing effective policies and regulations to protect tigers and their habitats, and ensuring their enforcement

*Promoting sustainable land use practices and reducing the impact of infrastructure development on tiger habitats

*Supporting community-based conservation initiatives that involve local people in the protection and management of tiger habitats

*Increasing public awareness and support for tiger conservation through education and outreach programs

By addressing these challenges and working together, we can help ensure a brighter future for tigers and the ecosystems they inhabit.

There are 13 genera within the Felinae subfamily, 4 genera within the Pantherinae subfamily and 1 within the Acinonychinae subfamily.

There are eight recognized subspecies of tiger, five of which are living (Bengal, Amur, Indo-Chinese, Sumatran and South China tigers).

As per the section 38 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, the state governments are responsible preparing a Tiger Conservation Plan which includes planning and management of notified areas and maintaining the requisite competent staff to ensure the protection of the tiger reserve and providing inputs for maintaining a viable population of tigers, co-predators and prey animals

Tiger reserves were set up as a part of Project Tiger initiated in 1973 and are administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority of Government of India. Tiger reserves consist of a core area which includes part(s) of protected areas such as a national park or a wildlife sanctuary and a buffer zone which is a mix of forested and non-forested land. Project tiger is aimed at performing the necessary activities to ensure viability of tiger population in the core area and to promote a balance between the existence of people and animals in the buffer zones.

In 1973, nine protected areas were initially designated as tiger reserves. By the late 1980s, the initial nine reserves covering an area of 9,115 km2 (3,519 sq mi) had been increased to 15 reserves covering an area of 24,700 km2 (9,500 sq mi). More than 1100 tigers were estimated to inhabit the reserves by 1984. By 1997, 23 tiger reserves encompassed an area of 33,000 km2 (13,000 sq mi). As of December 2024, there are 57 protected areas that have been designated as tiger reserves

Tiger population has become more than doubled from 1416 in 1973 to 3600+ in 2023 after the project tiger implementation in 1973 by government of india. It's been 50 years since its inception from 9 protected reserve areas to 57 reserve in 2024. Great job by government. But still we need to go long way to save tiger's from extinction. Where we need more reforms in law for protection and sufficient funding from government and by public participation to become more responsible in conservation activity to save tiger and forest and aware of it's ecological importance.

How can we contribute to tiger

1.) Spread the word and create awareness.

2.)Be a responsible tourist.

3.) Informing the nearest police station on any mischief.

4. Reducing pressure on natural resources

5.) Encouraging Students

6.) Severe punishment for poachers

7.) Ban the goods made of tiger skin and other parts of tiger.

8.) Protect forests

9.) Donate money to tiger conservation organizations

10.) Stop poaching and don't encourage poachers.

Save forest, Save tiger, Save ecosystem.
